Introduction to mobile messaging

Mobile message means a digital message transmitted to, from, or associated with a mobile telephone number or mobile messaging identifier via short message service (SMS), multimedia messaging service (MMS), rich communication services (RCS), WhatsApp, or any substantially similar or successor mobile messaging technology, protocol, application, or standard.

Mobile messaging lets you reach customers on the channels they use most—their phones—with timely, personalized messages. You can send simple text alerts, rich multimedia messages, branded RCS experiences, and WhatsApp conversations, all from the same platform.

Use mobile messaging to:

  • Drive revenue with promotions, back-in-stock alerts, and personalized recommendations.
  • Support the full customer journey with order updates, reminders, and post-purchase follow-ups.
  • Build trust with consent management, compliance tools, and two-way messaging.

Channels

  • SMS campaigns: Send personalized text messages at scale, manage sender profiles, handle consent, and track performance.
  • MMS campaigns: Enrich messages with images or video to increase engagement, with built-in tracking and reporting.
  • RCS campaigns: Create rich, interactive messages with buttons, carousels, and branded sender profiles. Falls back to SMS automatically when RCS isn't available. For definitions of all categories and types, see RCS message types and pricing plans.
  • WhatsApp campaigns: Run templated and conversational campaigns on a channel your customers already trust and use daily. For definitions of all categories and types, see WhatsApp message types and pricing.
