Marketing agent limitations
This page lists Marketing agent's limitations.
How Marketing agent handles requests
Marketing agent doesn't work from a fixed list of things it can't do. It tries a request, and if something's out of reach, it tells you, often with a workaround.
For example, if you ask Marketing agent to build a weblayer, it explains that weblayers exist only in Marketing, but offers to write the JavaScript and HTML you can copy into one yourself. It can also take a more creative approach by building a scenario with a weblayer node containing placeholder content.
You have the final say on every campaign. Review it before launch, because Marketing agent may occasionally attempt an unsupported solution.
Campaign creation
- The agent builds campaigns on email and SMS, including combined omnichannel campaigns — the agent doesn't yet support other channels.
- The agent generates each campaign's segments fresh — they're exclusive to that campaign and not reusable elsewhere.
- The agent applies frequency and send caps by default on most campaign types, with specific exceptions (milestone campaigns, calendar-cadence newsletters, explicit opt-out, true one-shot sends) — you don't need to configure this separately unless you want different behavior.
- For recovery-style campaigns (abandoned cart, reactivation, post-purchase, price-drop, restock — see examples and success stories), the agent requires an exit condition before handoff, and won't silently ship one of these without a way for customers to leave the flow, unless you've explicitly opted out.
- The agent identifies out-of-scope requests upfront rather than attempting them partway through.
- The agent requires explicit business rules for anything non-standard in the campaign brief, and assumes common practice otherwise.
Operational constraints
- You can mix manual edits to campaign content in the Marketing agent UI with conversational edits on the same campaign. Manual edits on the Canvas aren't supported. When an edit could cause a collision or confusion, one editing mode is temporarily disabled until you explicitly choose to edit or save your changes.
- The agent doesn't change or generate images except for multi-variant content generation or when explicitly prompted to do so.
- The agent renders email previews for desktop and mobile. Test device rendering by sending a test email.
- Before creating banners, the agent needs audience context by either constructing or referencing an existing audience cluster. Options for defining these clusters include:
- Requesting the agent to evaluate, propose, and refine audience clusters.
- Manually specifying the audience cluster definitions.
- The agent currently imports brand guidelines from an uploaded document in PDF or plain text. See [Banners and brand guidelines] for supported formats.
- Without a specified date range, the agent defaults to the last 90 days for data or performance questions. See [Insights: ask questions about your data] for the full behavior.
Optimization limits
- When prompted, the agent applies AI-optimized wait time to Abandoned Cart and Browse Abandonment campaigns, and other use cases when you prompt for it. It requires Contextual personalization (a Premium-tier feature).
- After launch, the agent adjusts send timing only — not subject lines, copy, audience, or offers. See how the agent makes decisions for the full mechanics.
- Optimization effectiveness depends on customer behavioral data accumulating after launch; a brand-new campaign has nothing to optimize against yet.
- Campaign changes require republishing to take effect — edits don't apply automatically to a live campaign.
Permissions
The agent inherits your own Marketing permissions — both module access and role, and can't do anything you couldn't already do yourself: no email module means no email campaigns; no Campaigns Admin role means no campaign creation, regardless of what you ask for.
