Boost and position lock your first product
What does it mean to boost or position lock a product?
Bloomreach's algorithm automatically ranks products in search and category results, continually changing their order to personalize product ranking for your customers and optimize for revenue conversion. But AI did not know all the information, for example the campaigns you are running and the products or brands you like to promote for the campaign. So we offer you various merchandising tools for you to customize the AI to create the best user experience for your shoppers/end-users. In this example, you may want to manually boost, bury or position lock products, and that's the task that we're walking through here: create a ranking rule to position lock and boost a product.
When you have products that you specifically want your customers to see, then you can position lock or boost them in search or category results, putting them at the top (boost to top operation). Lock the product at a certain grid position (Lock in place operation). You can also bury products, moving them toward the end of search results (Bury to bottom operation).
Veronica is a merchandiser for a site that sells home goods. She knows that the internal buyer for the pillows got a great deal on a specific yellow pillow and the margin is high, but it is not showing up in an optimal spot in search results. She decides to boost that specific product in searches for pillows and a few other terms.
Before you Start
We're walking through a very simple ranking rule for keyword searches, but it's always a good idea to plan the rule first even when the rule is simple. You need to assemble a list of keywords/category pages that you want to trigger your rule to boost a particular product. If there are already ranking rules associated for the keywords/category pages that you have selected, then we recommend that you check for conflicts within the Bloomreach Dashboard under the Merchandising Tab.
Veronica plans her new ranking rule
Veronica determines that she needs to create a ranking rule to boost a specific yellow pillow for specific keyword searches. She might decide later to create a similar rule for category searches, but for now, she's only creating a rule for keyword searches.
She makes a list of the keywords that she wants to trigger the rule:
Let's get Started
Open the Ranking page by following the steps below:
Enter a list of search terms in the Search Terms field that you want to trigger this rule. This field accepts comma-separated values.
These queries become the name of your rule when you save it.
The Search Terms field is right above the area where you searched for products and boosted them. The terms that you enter here are the terms that your customers enter when they search for products like the one you boosted. While you can enter just one term like pillows, typically customers use varying terms to assign these rules to more than one search term or category page. Make sure you hit enter after you enter each search term so that it turns into a "bubble". You can then click on these "bubbles" to view the product results for each of the different queries.
Note: You might like to experiment with different queries, especially during this tutorial. As long as you don't enable the rule at the end, you don't have to worry that your experiments might adversely affect your customers' experiences on your site. If you do enable the rule and then discover problems, it's easy to disable the rule and either fix it or delete it and create a new one.
Search for the product that you want to add to the result .
By default, in the left panel Product tab is selected for you. You can check by looking at the Search by value: Product is underlined in blue to indicate that it's the selected option.
Enter search terms in the search field. You can search by keyword, product ID, or category ID.
These search terms are not necessarily the same terms that your site's customers might enter. Right now, you're using any terms that can help you find the product that you want to add to the search results.
Press your Enter or Return key to start the search.
What's Veronica doing?
Veronica enters her search terms
Veronica knows exactly which product she wants to boost. She doesn't know the product ID, but she does know the pillow is yellow. After she presses her Return key, Bloomreach displays a list of products that match her search.
Click the product that you want to add, then drag it to the right panel (Visual Editor) OR click the three dots and select Boost to Top or Lock Position # from the dropdown that appears.
Boost to Top: The product mark as boost to top will appear on the top of the results. If you have multiple products mark as boost to top, the order among these products will be determined by algorithm and auto-optimized.
To add a new product to a recall set, you have two options:
Can I boost or lock more than one product?
While this tutorial walks you through boosting or locking just one product, there's no reason not to experiment with boosting or locking multiple products and then leave the rule disabled until you can review any existing rules to determine if there are conflicts. So if you have other products that you want to boost or lock in this same rule, then keep repeating the same operation sequences. You might need to do multiple searches to find all the products that you want to boost or lock in this rule.
As you add more products, you can change their position. Just click a product and drag it where you want it.
If you drag a product onto a position locked product, you will be asked if you would like to shift down the position of that locked product and other position-locked products after it.
For product "Boost to Top" and "Bury to Bottom", the order is dynamic and the visual editor may not reflect the API output. Preview function will show the exact API output.If there are multiple products "Boost to Top" or "Bury to Bottom", then within the boosted or buried product respectiely, the position will change based on Bloomreach's ranking algorithm.
I spotted a product that I want to bury
You bury products the same way that you boost them with a small difference. Click the product's + menu to open a short list of options, then select Bury to Bottom & Lock.
You can do this step directly from the search results when you search for products to go into your ranking rule, or you can drag the product into the rule space on the right of your search results, then bury it. Either way, the product moves to the last position if you already have other products in the field. Similarly to boosted products, a lock appears next to a buried product's menu. A boosted product has a green lock, and a buried product has a yellow lock.
If you are burying multiple products, you can change their order the same way you can when you boost products. Be a little bit careful when you have a mixed rule of boosted and buried products – you might accidentally change a buried product into a boosted product. Just keep an eye on the lock icon to make sure the products you want boosted retain a green lock, and buried products have a yellow lock.
Set a time period for your ranking rule in the Duration field.
By default, the duration of the rule is set for only the day that you create the rule. Click the box to open a calendar picker to set a different duration, or clear the checkbox next to Duration to apply the rule with no specific end date.
Click the Save button to save the curation rules you just set. Once you do, your rule is saved and the dashboard returns your to the Ranking page. The name of your rule is the same as the list of keywords that you configured in the Search Terms field to trigger the rule. It can take up to 30 mins for your rule to reflect in API.
You can find your rule in the Ranking page's list. You can toggle the Enable slider from Off to On and vice versa to enable/disable a rule. It can take up to 30 mins for your rule to reflect in API.
What do I enter in the search field when I look for the products I want to boost or bury?
The search field is for you to find the products that you want to boost and bury. The search terms that you enter aren't necessarily the search terms that trigger the rule.
You can enter a keyword, a category ID, or a Product ID in the Add Products search field. Here are the syntax rules for entering these values:
To enter multiple keywords, use comma-separated values with spaces.
To search by category ID, enter category_id:#catid, where #catid is the specific ID number for the category. For example, category_id:123
- To search by product ID, enter product_id:#pid, where #pid is the specific ID number for the product. For example, product_id:123
Note : We don't support Ranking operations (Boost/Bury/Product Slots) for "*" query (which refers to all the products in the feed/catalog)
Commas and spaces
Separate individual keywords with both a comma and a space. The following list of keywords is in the correct format: red, strappy, heel, sandals
Plan your ranking rule before you create it
Before you start to create or modify a rule, gather all of the information that you need for the task and decide how you want the rule to work. There is no draft mode for working with boost and bury rules. Planning is especially important if you decide to create multiple-value rules.
Decide the scope of what you want the rule to modify. The rule can affect the following:
- Ranking results for a keyword search
- Ranking results for a category listing request
- Boosted items
- Buried items
If you want the rule to be triggered by users' keyword searches, then create a list of the keywords that you want to trigger the rule.
If you want the query to take effect for a category page that Commerce Search powers the product listing grid for, then make a list of the category IDs that you want the rule to modify.
Check for conflicts in your ranking rules
Make a plan before you add a rule. You need to consider your existing ranking rules and evaluate their potential conflicts. For example, Lucia already has the following boost rule:
Boost: strappy, sandals
She wants to add the following multiple-keyword bury rule:
Bury: summer, sandals, beach
There's a conflict between her new rule and her existing rule. To prevent the conflict without ignoring her rule, Commerce Search applies the summer part of the rule, and ignores the rest of it.
Before creating the new bury rule, Lucia needs to plan it. She needs to decide if she wants to bury or boost sandals. If she wants to continue to boost sandals, then she removes sandals from her mutliple-keyword rule, making it look like this:
Bury: summer, beach
But if she wants to switch sandals from boost to bury, then she needs to delete sandals from her existing strappy, sandals rule. After she deletes that element from her old rule, then her summer, sandals, beach rule works, while still boosting strappy in her old rule. Here are her rules now:
Bury: summer, sandals, beach

If you try to create a rule that affects a product that's already being ranked by another rule, then a yellow triangle appears next to the green or red locking symbol.
