Product review ingestion
This guide introduces the Product review ingestion feature.
What is Product review ingestion
Product review ingestion turns your product reviews into concise, AI-generated summaries that Clarity uses to answer product questions.
Enrich Clarity’s responses with what customers actually say — the praise, durability, and how highly they rate a product. Shoppers see the themes that matter instead of scrolling dozens of individual reviews.
For instance, when a shopper searches "comfortable wireless earbuds," Clarity search results display summaries such as: "94% would recommend”, “Praised for comfort during 8-hour wear."
Benefits
-
Answer questions with real customer voice. A shopper asks, "How long does the battery last?" Clarity draws from real shopper reviews to answer: "Based on 240 verified reviews, most customers report a battery life of 8-10 hours."
-
Build trust with clear signals. Ratings, recommendation rates, and review counts help shoppers decide.
-
Keep insights trustworthy. Only approved reviews shape a summary, so spam and rejected reviews never influence answers.
How Product review ingestion works
- Provide your reviews. Contact your Product Engagement Manager (PEM), who sets up your review platform integration.
- Clarity validates the reviews, removes duplicates, and summarizes the reviews for each product.
- Clarity enriches search and shopper answers with the summaries, ratings, and review counts.
As more reviews arrive, each product's summary updates to reflect the latest shopper feedback.
Review platform integration
Requirements differ by platform, so follow the section for the platform you use. Clarity supports Bazaarvoice and PowerReviews.
What you provide
Share the credentials with your PEM. Clarity stores them securely.
Bazaarvoice
- For daily automatic updates: your Bazaarvoice API passkey.
- For a full re-import: your Bazaarvoice passkey, API key, and shared secret.
NoteTo avoid potential issues like rate limits associated with standard APIs, provide all API credentials through the Bloomreach partnership with Bazaarvoice.
PowerReviews
Your PowerReviews client ID and client secret. The same pair covers both daily updates and full re-imports.
Update frequency
-
Daily sync (automatic): Each day, Clarity pulls new and changed reviews and updates only the products that changed. Summaries refresh on their own.
-
Full re-import (on request): To reload everything. For example, after a large data change, your PEM runs a complete import, then rebuilds the summaries.
One-time CSV upload
If you don't connect a platform, or you want to add reviews from another source system, share a CSV file with your PEM to import. The recommended file size is 20 to 30 MB. Clarity summarizes imported reviews automatically. Each review needs these required fields:
| Field | Type | Purpose |
content | String | Full review text. |
moderationStatus | Enum | APPROVED, PENDING, or REJECTED. |
productId | String | Links review to product catalog. |
rating | Integer | Rating value. Typically 1-5, used for average calculation. |
reviewId | String | Unique identifier from your source system. |
submissionTimestamp | Long | When the review was submitted. Unix milliseconds, UTC (for example, 1705316400000). |
title | String | Review headline or title. |
verifiedPurchaser | Boolean | Verified purchase indicator. |
NoteReviews need at least 10 characters of text after cleanup. Clarity automatically removes formatting, emoji, and duplicates, so you can re-send a file safely without inflating review counts.
Reviews summary
Prerequisites:
- A product's catalog data must be in Clarity before its reviews can be summarized.
- If your source system or third-party review platform supports moderation status, provide the
moderationStatusfield for each review. If you upload reviews by CSV and don’t include themoderationStatusfield, the review is marked APPROVED by default.
Overview: Clarity only summarizes approved reviews, so your insights stay accurate and trustworthy.
- Approved: Included in the summary, rating average, and review count.
- Pending: Stored but held back until approved.
- Rejected: Never included.
Summaries appear in a neutral, balanced tone. They highlight what shoppers actually observed — both strengths and trade-offs — and skip marketing language.
Clarity summarizes up to 10,000 reviews per product. Products with more reviews are summarized from the most relevant portion. If a product has no approved reviews yet, it still appears in search using your catalog data, just without review context.
